NHELD, LLC.

                                                      What is NHELD, LLC

NHELD, LLC is an acronym for National Home Education Legal Defense, a national organization open to all who wish to join, that seeks to protect and defend the rights of families who wish to educate in freedom. In everyday use, we just call it "NHELD" .

                                                          NHELD's Goals
Freedom to educate:
Parents have the inherent obligation and right to raise and educate their children in whatever manner they deem appropriate to best meet the needs of their children.  To exercise that right, however, parents must have freedom from interference with that right. NHELD's goal is to work with all parents to make sure their freedom is maintained to meet their child's needs in whatever manner they are educated.

Empowerment of individuals:
The Declaration of Independence empowered individuals. It acknowledged that the people  form government, to protect their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  The people did so by adopting the Constitution, specifically limiting the power of the government, and protecting the  inherent rights of the people. The people, today, however, too often feel that the government is more empowered than they are.  NHELD's goal is to make sure people continue to be rightfully empowered. They can do so through  knowledge, information, and accurate facts about what the law actually says at the moment, and how it may be proposed to change in the future.  NHELD will share whatever knowledge, information, and accurate facts that we can, and to support parents in their endeavors to maintain their freedom.

Unity of purpose:
One individual acting to retain freedom faces a daunting task. Many individuals acting to retain freedom face an achievable task, a task that can, must be, and has been accomplished and sustained.

NHELD believes that where homeschoolers in one state have succeeded in retaining their freedom to educate, that state should be used as a model to be replicated in the other states, should they choose to do so. In order to facilitate this process, NHELD is establishing a central clearinghouse of information where homeschoolers can present  facts, methods, and procedures they use to successfully resolve legal and political problems in their home state. NHELD members can then request and participate in joint meetings across state lines to share in the exchange of ideas and to have power in numbers.

Regarding legal matters:
It has been NHELD’s experience that most legal problems encountered by families who homeschool may be resolved without resorting to litigation or the adoption of new state or federal laws.

Sometimes, however, attorneys may be needed to assist. In order for any attorney to provide legal advice, that attorney must be licensed to practice law in your state. We will be establishing a network of attorneys to assist you, if necessary, in the months ahead.

NHELD believes that attorneys living, working, and practicing law in your state are most informed about the nuances regarding your state’s homeschooling laws. However, NHELD also believes that these attorneys will be better able to protect your freedom to educate by networking with other attorneys and homeschool associations throughout the country in order to foster exchange of ideas, information, and strategy. That is why, in the months ahead, NHELD will be establishing its network of attorneys and homeschool associations nationwide.

In the meantime, we can help you navigate through legal issues in the following ways:

    •    Provide a plan of action for your family to follow in the event of a problem encountered with

government officials in instructing your children.
    •    Provide communication from NHELD, LLC, to government officials in explanation of

          homeschooling issues.
    •    Provide a referral to others knowledgeable about homeschooling issues who may be able to

          assist you.
    •     Provide position papers on important public policy issues.
    •     Provide testimony at legislative hearings; appear as an expert witness in court; appear as a

keynote speaker at local workshops or events; and otherwise provide consultation by

Attorney Deborah G. Stevenson as necessary

                                           NHELD’S Beliefs

NHELD does not believe in just directing families to act in unison on the basis of an opinion that NHELD has formed on its own. NHELD believes in empowering individuals to act in accordance with their own conscience and unique circumstances.

NHELD believes in: (1) informing individuals about where to find proposed legislation, in its entirety; (2) advising individuals not to take the word of anyone else about what legislation says, but to read the text for themselves to formulate their own opinion; and (3) providing suggestions, when asked, about how to protect their rights or how to affect legislation.

NHELD does not believe in blindly following the word of anyone. NHELD believes in an informed, empowered citizenry, able to fight for freedom effectively, when necessary.
